American Express has introduced facial and fingerprint recognition to enhance its SafeKey service, designed to prevent fraudulent use of Amex Cards during online checkouts. In a new pilot program, the company will become the first card scheme to provide these biometric features, prompting select U.S. Card Members with eligible devices to enable facial or fingerprint recognition when checking out with SafeKey. The technology utilizes Web Authentication technologies from the FIDO Alliance and World Wide Web Consortium, offering a more straightforward and more secure authentication process than traditional passwords, and will be rolled out to all U.S. Consumer Card Members in early 2024.
